Maintaining your credential with Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI) reflects your commitment to professional excellence, ethical practice, and continued growth in spiritual care.

All credentialed members must complete an annual renewal to remain in good standing.

Annual renewal ensures that CPEI credentialed members continue to demonstrate:

Ongoing professional development
Accountability to their faith tradition

This process supports both the integrity of CPEI credentials and the quality of care provided by its members.

If Your Credential Lapses

If renewal is not completed:

You may not represent yourself as credentialed by CPEI
Additional steps or fees may be required for reinstatement
Extended lapses may require reapplication

Reinstatement (If Needed)

To reinstate a lapsed credential, you may need to:

Submit updated documentation
Verify continuing education
Pay outstanding fees
Complete a review process

To maintain your credential each year, you must:

Maintain Ecclesiastical Endorsement

Remain in good standing with your endorsing body
Report any changes to CPEI

Complete Continuing Education

Participate in ongoing professional development
Topics may include spiritual care, ethics, and ministry practice
Be prepared to provide documentation if requested

Remain Actively Engaged in Practice

Work or serve in chaplaincy, ministry, or a related field
This may include employment, volunteer work, teaching, or leadership

Follow the CPEI Code of Ethics

Maintain professional and ethical standards at all times

Pay Annual Certification Fees

Submit annual dues to maintain active credential status
